Tätigkeitsbeschreibung

The successful candidate will further develop and apply global and regional Earth System models for the analysis of climate change and land use change impacts on water availability, droughts and floods, and for different climate and water sensitive regions worldwide.

Persönliche Qualifikation

- PhD in Hydrology, Meteorology, Environmental- or Geo-Sciences, Physics, or related fields with strong relation to scientific computing

- Sound experience in Earth System Modeling for hydrological analyses with regionally refining global models such as MPAS and ICON; experience in WRF & WRF-Hydro, COSMO-CLM, or land surface modelling in general is an asset

- Strong programming and modern software engineering skills

- Deep knowledge of programming languages such as Python and FORTRAN

- Experience in high-performance computing, working on Linux clusters

- English language proficiency, ability to communicate in German is a benefit.

- Strong writing skills and excellent publication record

- Self-motivated personality, with strong communication and coordination skills to work within a multi-disciplinary team and environment on challenging international problems

PostDoc / Senior Scientist (f/m/d) in the field of operational probabilistic sub-seasonal to seasonal (S2S) forecasting and cloud computing

Tätigkeitsbeschreibung

The position is part of an international project on an improved meteorological-hydrological forecasting system for transboundary water management of the Blue Nile River using a “seamless” approach, i.e with intersecting forecast horizons ranging from days to several months. The project will be conducted in close cooperation with Sudanese and Ethiopian partners. A central task of the position will be to develop a “cloud-ready” workflow, implement an online decision-support tool and transfer the system into practice.

Persönliche Qualifikation

- PhD in (Geo-)Informatics, Mathematics, Physics, Environmental- or Geo-Sciences, Meteorology, Hydrology, or related fields with strong relation to scientific computing

- Sound experience in bias correction methods, data management, big data geoscience, cloud-ready implementation and project coordination in general is an asset

- Strong programming and modern software engineering skills

- Deep knowledge of programming languages, preferably Python (including PANGEO ecosystem)

- Experience in high-performance computing, working on Linux clusters

- English language proficiency, ability to communicate in German is a benefit.

- Strong writing skills and excellent publication record

- Self-motivated personality, with strong communication and coordination skills to work within a multi-disciplinary team and environment on challenging international problems

PostDoc Researcher (f/m/d) in the field of Biogeochemistry of forested wetland ecosystems

Tätigkeitsbeschreibung

Your work is integrated in the EU-funded project LiWeFor (Living labs for Wetland Forest research), which is coordinated by the Tartu Ulikool, Estonia, with KIT and University of Helsinki as partners. The main aim of LiWeFor is to establish and develop a global network of Living Labs of wetland forest research, education and management.

Your task is to supervise and carry out field and laboratory experiments on GHG emissions from forested wetland ecosystems in Estonia, and the tropics (Malaysia, Peru), to develop teaching and training modules on soil process studies and GHG measurements, and to further develop modelling tools to assess environmental impacts of different carbon and nutrient management strategies for temperate and tropical wetland forests for informing stakeholders and policymakers. Furthermore, the position offers space for own scientific activities as well as writing proposals and publications.

Persönliche Qualifikation

You have a successfully completed university degree, ideally with a doctorate in biogeochemistry, environmental sciences (incl. modelling of terrestrial ecosystem C/ N cycles), geography, remote sensing or similar. You like to work in an interdisciplinary team, you are flexible and open to extended times of field work (in Peru, Malaysia, Estonia) and partner institution visits (with main time being spent at Aarhus University). You bring good communication skills, very good knowledge of statistics, and you have experience in publishing in international journals.
